Two bodies remain missing five days after deadly Mon landslides as road access, power and communications remain severely disrupted
DIMAPUR — Five days after incessant rain triggered devastating landslides and flash floods in Mon district on July 19, the death toll stands at nine, with two bodies yet to be recovered. Large parts of the district remain cut off from the rest of Nagaland.
As of Thursday evening, rescue teams were still searching for the bodies of a college student and a woman, both reportedly from Thamnan ward in Mon town.
Road connectivity remains severely disrupted, while power supply had not been restored as of Thursday. Mobile connectivity also continues to be poor, making it difficult to obtain detailed updates from affected areas.

According to sources, the missing college student was a first-semester BA student from Mon. He had gone to a friend's house to watch the FIFA World Cup 2026 final and stayed overnight. The landslide struck the house, killing the student and four members of his friend's family, while his friend survived.
With electricity disrupted since July 17, much of Mon district remains in darkness, further hampering communication and relief efforts.
