Phek Police arrest a youth in alleged minor sexual assault case after victim's pregnancy was confirmed

KOHIMA — Phek Police arrested a 23-year-old youth on June 2 in connection with a case involving the alleged sexual assault of a minor girl.
According to an update issued by Phek Police on Wednesday, a written First Information Report (FIR) was received on June 2 from a complainant alleging that the accused had sexually assaulted the complainant's minor sister.
Police stated that the victim was later confirmed to be pregnant through an ultrasound examination.
After the complaint was received, a case was opened at the Women Police Station in Phek under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for further investigation.

A special team constituted by Phek Police subsequently arrested the accused from Dimapur on the same day with assistance from Dimapur Police.
Sources confirmed that the accused is a resident of Phek district.
Police said that the investigation is ongoing and assured that the case would be completed in a timely manner.
It also appealed to the public to respect the privacy and identity of the minor victim and refrain from sharing any information that could lead to her identification.
The police cautioned that disclosure of the identity of a child victim is punishable under Section 72 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 23 of the POCSO Act.
