Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio visits landslide-hit Mon, announces INR 10 lakh relief, assures support for affected families and rehabilitation efforts
DIMAPUR — Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Monday visited the landslide-hit Defence colony in Walo ward, Mon town, announced an immediate relief of INR 10 lakh for emergency response, and conducted an aerial survey of the worst-affected areas of Tizit and Tuli.
According to a DIPR update, Rio met community leaders and those coordinating relief operations, reviewed the ongoing response and restoration work, and assessed the extent of the damage on the ground. In a post on X after the visit, he said the government "remains committed to relief and early restoration of affected areas."
Addressing residents, the chief minister described the landslide as an unfortunate incident and conveyed his condolences to families who suffered losses. He commended volunteers, civil society organisations, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Mon Police and the district administration for their rescue and relief efforts, urging them to continue supporting affected families.

Rio said that Nagaland, like many other parts of the world, was increasingly experiencing the effects of climate change. Stressing the need to reduce future risks, he urged strict adherence to building by-laws and other safety regulations while undertaking construction in vulnerable areas.
As an immediate relief measure, the chief minister handed over INR 10 lakh to civil society organisations led by the Konyak Union for emergency response and assured that the government would take the necessary steps to address the situation.
Advisor W Chingang Konyak, speaking on behalf of the Konyak legislators, also expressed sympathy to families affected by the disaster.
During the visit, an investigation team of the Konyak Union presented a video documenting the widespread destruction caused by the landslides. The team informed the chief minister that Mon town had been cut off from the rest of the state after landslides blocked key road links, including the Mon-Tizit, Mon-Naganimora, Mon-Sonari, Mon-Wakching and Mon-Aboi routes.
Deputy Commissioner of Mon Wennyei Konyak thanked the chief minister and his delegation for visiting the district and assessing the situation firsthand, while Konyak Union president Yamao Konyak appreciated the government's support and financial assistance.
