Nagaland honoured 12 teachers at the State-Level Teachers’ Day celebration at Khouchiezhie Kohima Local Ground
KOHIMA — Nagaland’s journey from having one of the country’s lowest literacy rates at the time of statehood to becoming the third-most literate state has been made possible largely through the contributions of teachers, said Advisor for School Education Dr Kekhrielhoulie Yhome on Saturday.

Addressing the state-level Teachers’ Day celebration at Khouchiezhie Kohima Local Ground,
Yhome thanked teachers for not only improving people's lives but also giving them education and lifelong lessons.
He also congratulated the 32,714 teachers in government and private schools who are serving communities across the state.
Teaching is considered a noble profession because teachers make no distinction among students and teach them with the same love and care that they would give their own children, he said.
When students achieve good results, whether securing a place in the top ten or earning a distinction, there is no greater reward for teachers than the smile and happiness they experience in seeing their students succeed in life, he said, adding that education can set people free, apart from religion.
The Advisor said the State Government is working towards improving the school system and laying the foundation for a new level of education. By 2035, Gen Z would be handling public and government affairs as well as the private sector, so the state is building a generation of leadership through its school ecosystem, he added.
Yhome said the transformation of schools is being undertaken through three pillars – infrastructure, enhancement of teacher training and human resource management, and introduction of world-class education systems into classrooms through curriculum design and innovative approaches--to prepare future-ready Nagas with a global 21st century skill set.
He cautioned that students without skills will struggle to survive in the 21st century, as Gen Z moves into leadership while nurturing Gen Alpha and Gen Beta.
Admitting that infrastructure continues to be a major challenge in many government as well as private schools, he said it would be improved gradually through developmental projects.
He also highlighted success stories Nagas in various fields, urging the people to appreciate their own achievements and recognise their potential to produce excellence, not only within the State or at the national level but also at the international level.

He congratulated GHSS Sechu Zubza for producing Ronald Meru, who was selected for the National Teachers’ Award, noting that he was chosen from among millions of teachers in the country.
The State’s vision is to nurture Gen Z, Gen Alpha and Gen Beta into world-class individuals who can compete with the best globally. To achieve this, he said, the care and love provided in classrooms and school compounds, along with strong parent-teacher relationships, are crucial.
He expressed hope that teachers would continue to strive for the bright future of students despite the difficult situations and hardships they face, particularly those serving in geographically challenging areas of Nagaland.
Earlier in the programme, Commissioner and Secretary of School Education and SCERT Nagaland, Asangla Imti, delivered the welcome address.

The School Safety Excellence Awards, introduced through the collaborative efforts of the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Department of School Education and NagaEd under the School Safety Policy Compliance Course Phases 1 and 2, were also presented at the event. The recipients of award are: Nukshitemjen, PT Teacher, Government High School Kubolong, Mokokchung, and Wanglem W Konyak, Primary Teacher and Scout Master, Holy Angel’s School, Tizit Town, Mon.
Holiday on September 7
Meanwhile, the Directorate of School Education has notified that Monday, September 7, will be observed as a holiday for all government and private schools across the State in honour of teachers.
