S Supongmeren Jamir urges the Centre to declare emergency in Nagaland as monsoon devastation disrupts lives, roads and supplies
DIMAPUR — Amid widespread destruction caused by weeks of relentless monsoon rain, Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president and Lok Sabha MP S Supongmeren Jamir has urged the Centre to declare an emergency in the state.
In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Jamir stated that the monsoon disaster had caused immense human suffering, with Mon and Mokokchung districts among the worst-affected. He wrote that lives had been lost, houses destroyed and domestic animals washed away, while roads across almost all districts had been damaged or swept away, crippling transport and communication.
He highlighted that the destruction had severely disrupted the supply of essential commodities and left many areas inaccessible, adding that Army helicopter services had become a crucial lifeline for stranded residents.

The Congress MP also highlighted the plight of students in remote urban and rural areas, saying many had been cut off due to damaged roads and communication links and were facing immense hardship.
Stating that the state was struggling to cope with the scale of the disaster, Jamir appealed to the PM to intervene urgently. "I request your esteemed authority to look into the seriousness of the situation that the state is facing. I would be grateful if the government of India could declare an emergency for immediate relief services to the state of Nagaland," he wrote.
