A disaster management and preparedness workshop was held for village leaders in Peren district to boost resilience.

DIMAPUR — A workshop on disaster management and preparedness, primarily for village leaders of Tening and Ahthibung blocks in Peren district, was organised at the Samziuram Village Council Hall on Tuesday.
According to an update, the workshop was organised by Pro Rural with support from Brot für die Welt (BftW) and co-hosted by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Home Guards and Civil Defence, and the Fire Department, Jalukie.
The event brought together representatives from government departments, village leaders, FPOs, women and youth organisations, community members, and project beneficiaries to strengthen disaster preparedness, emergency response, and community resilience.
Director of Pro Rural Paul Lokho spoke on the occasion on the increasing vulnerability of rural communities to natural disasters and noted the importance of strengthening local capacities through awareness, collaboration, and practical preparedness.
He also shared that Pro Rural is now an approved DonateKart-Amazon partner for emergency disaster relief in the Northeast India region. During disasters such as floods, landslides, fires, and cyclones, the affected families can receive relief kits within 72 hours of request.

Project Manager of BftW-Pro Rural, Lesehu Meru, delivered a presentation on the BftW project. He shared the project's objectives, milestones, achievements, and ongoing efforts to build resilient communities. Meru pointed out the importance of integrating disaster risk reduction into community development initiatives and encouraged active participation from all stakeholders.
The technical session on disaster management was facilitated by Kedigong, District Project Associate from the DDMA, Peren. The session focused on disaster risk reduction, preparedness measures, early warning systems, and the role of community leaders in responding effectively to emergencies.
He also encouraged the stakeholders to form village disaster management authorities (VDMAs) in their towns and villages for emergency assistance and identifying local hazards.
An emergency response and first aid session was conducted by officials from the Home Guards and Civil Defence department. Through practical demonstrations, the deputy commander and OC, along with their team, demonstrated essential life-saving techniques, including emergency response procedures, first aid, bleeding control, patient handling, and the use of improvised resources during emergencies.
The workshop also featured a fire safety demonstration conducted by personnel from the Fire Station, Jalukie. Participants were introduced to fire prevention strategies, safe evacuation procedures, and the correct use of fire safety equipment.
The programme concluded with an interactive panel discussion and question-and-answer session, where participants shared experiences, raised concerns, and sought clarification from resource persons on various aspects of disaster preparedness and emergency management.
