Census 2027 House Listing Operations begin across Nagaland today, with 6,134 personnel conducting digital household enumeration through July 30
KOHIMA — The Census 2027 phase of House Listing Operations (HLO) will begin on July 1, across the 17 districts of Nagaland, with more than 6,000 census personnel geared up for the exercise.
A total of 6,134 personnel, including 5,118 enumerators and 1,016 supervisors, have been appointed from various government departments to conduct the exercise. In addition, 17 principal census officers, 17 district census officers, 157 charge officers, six master trainers and 130 field trainers have been designated for Census 2027 in Nagaland.
The House Listing Operations phase, which will run until July 30, will gather data on housing conditions, available amenities and household assets, and will provide the framework for Phase II of the Census. During this phase, households will answer 33 questions, with responses being entered directly into a mobile application.
Census 2027 is being conducted digitally, and all data will be collected through a mobile application.

In Kohima district, around 637 trained field functionaries will visit every household to collect the required information.
Questions to expect
The 33 questions have been divided into four categories. Under the housing conditions category, information will be collected on the line number, building number, house number, the predominant materials used for the floor, walls and roof of the census house, the use of the census house, and its overall condition.
Under household information, questions will cover the household number, the total number of persons normally residing in the household, the name and sex of the head of the household, whether the head belongs to the SC, ST or Other category, ownership status, the number of dwelling rooms exclusively occupied by the household, and the number of married couples living in the household.
The amenities available category will include the main source of drinking water and its availability, the main source of lighting, access to a latrine and its type, wastewater outlet, availability of a bathing facility, availability of a kitchen and LPG/PNG connection, and the main fuel used for cooking.
Under assets possessed by the household, information will be collected on ownership of a radio/transistor, television, internet access, laptop/computer, telephone/mobile phone/smartphone and various types of vehicles. It will also record the main cereal consumed by the household.
Between 2011 and 2027
The number of districts has increased from 11 during Census 2011 to 17 for Census 2027. Similarly, the number of sub-districts has risen from 114 to 118.
The number of statutory towns has increased from 19 to 39, while the number of census towns has declined from seven to five. A total of 1,606 villages will be covered under Census 2027, compared with 1,428 villages during Census 2011.
The second phase, Population Enumeration (PE), which will collect demographic, socio-cultural and economic data, along with information on migration and fertility, will begin in February 2027.
