Nagaland officials warn that furnishing false census data is punishable under the Census Act during Census 2027.

KOHIMA — Director of Census Operations, Nagaland, Dr. Kenei Miachieo on Wednesday said that extensive awareness campaigns and cooperation from the public, community organisations and village authorities would be crucial to ensuring the collection of accurate and reliable data during Census 2027.
He was addressing a press conference jointly organised by the Directorate of Census Operations, Nagaland, and the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Kohima, at Kohima Press Club on Wednesday.
Dr. Miachieo said that extensive preparations had been undertaken to ensure the accuracy of the Census, adding that personnel had been trained and comprehensive training programmes were still underway.
Systems had been put in place to detect duplicate entries and other anomalies at every stage of the exercise to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the data collected, he assured.

The director informed that a web-based portal would be used for monitoring and managing Census activities, while House Listing Blocks would be created through a web-mapping application.
He reminded that furnishing false information during the Census is punishable under the provisions of the Census Act, 1948.
On the self-enumeration process, which began in the state on June 16, he informed that around 400 self-enumeration submissions had been received by 2 pm on Tuesday and expressed hope that more people would participate before the exercise concludes on June 30.

Individual information collected during the Census is kept confidential under Section 15 of the Census Act, he said, adding that the exercise is being conducted in collaboration with state governments and Union territories.
He also recalled that the last Census was conducted in 2011 and that Census 2027 will be the country's 16th Census and the eighth since Independence.
Kelevituo Nisa, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Nagaland, said that the state presently comprises 17 districts, 118 sub-divisions, 39 statutory towns, five census towns and 1,606 villages for the purpose of Census 2027.
He informed that a total of 6,134 Census personnel, including enumerators and supervisors, have been deployed for the exercise in Nagaland.
Training programmes for Principal Census Officers, District Census Officers, Charge Officers, Master Trainers and Field Trainers have already been completed across the state.
Nisa also highlighted some of the major challenges likely to be encountered during the exercise, including adverse weather conditions, manpower constraints and internet connectivity issues, particularly in remote areas.
He informed that the first phase of the House Listing and Housing Census in Nagaland will be conducted from July 1 to July 30, 2026.
