DIMAPUR — Patkai Christian College (Autonomous) and Norman Putsure College held their respective freshers’ socials on August 23, welcoming new students with cultural showcases, contests, and messages.

According to a press release, Patkai Christian College (Autonomous) observed its freshers’ social at the Bundrock Auditorium on the theme “Genesis: a journey towards excellence”.

Speaking on the occasion as guest speaker, V Lovitoli Sema, director, Higher Education, stated that the day marked the beginning of a new chapter in the students’ lives.

Stating that the theme was both profound and inspiring, Lovitoli noted that genesis reminds one of beginnings, which always hold the seeds of possibility. She encouraged the freshers, pointing out that they were embarking on a holistic journey that is not merely academic, but also personal, social, and moral.

The director further noted that excellence is not achieved in a single strike but through consistent effort, discipline, and a willingness to learn, unlearn, and relearn. She pointed out that education in the contemporary context is not confined to textbooks and classrooms. “It is about nurturing values, shaping character and equipping oneself with the challenges to face the world,” she underscored.

Addressing the freshers, she urged them to remain curious, ask questions, seek knowledge, respect diversity, and nurture friendships as they stepped into the new environment. She noted that college life brings both opportunities that open doors as well as challenges that build resilience. She reminded them that their experience in college would prepare them not only for their careers but also for life and assured them that with perseverance, humility, and faith, excellence would be within their reach.

Lovitoli, an alumna of Patkai, described her alma mater not merely as an institution but as a place where friendships blossomed, faith was nurtured, and lessons were learned beyond academics, which she continues to carry with gratitude. To this, she acknowledged the founder, teaching faculty, and other stakeholders for the immeasurable roles they play in shaping young minds.

Earlier, the principal, Dr. Thepfuvilie Pieru, welcomed the gathering, particularly the freshers, while the students’ union president, Heme Sumao, delivered the presidential address. Sentijungla M spoke on behalf of the undergraduate freshers. The event also featured a display of culture and musical performances by the students of the Margaret Shishak School of Music.

One of the highlights of the freshers’ social was the Mr. and Miss Patkai contest, which began with an introduction round during the formal session and continued with the remaining segments in the informal session later in the evening. Following the casual wear, formal wear, and question-and-answer rounds with the top five finalists, Yongkonglemba Chang was crowned Mr. Patkai, while Yume Doke was adjudged Miss Patkai.

Akivi V Asumi and Chingmi Khangrah bagged the first runner-up titles, while Chang also won the subtitle of Mr. Perfect, and Chisile Hoi was named Miss Perfect. The Mr. and Miss Multimedia awards went to Nokching Yanchu T and Chonthunglo Ngullie, respectively.

The informal session saw an array of performances by seniors—including dances, songs, and a creative shadow play. The highlight of the day was the Mr. and Miss Fresher Contest, where new students showcased their talents and charm through three themed rounds (traditional, casual, and formal) and a finale.
