DIMAPUR — Warning that the ageing Atu Ghoki bridge has become a safety risk and a growing bottleneck for commuters, the Niuland Tokukujo Kükami Küqhakulu (Niuland Area GBs’ Association) has appealed to Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio to sanction the construction of a new RCC bridge during 2026–27.
In a representation submitted on Monday, the association stated that the existing RCC bridge, constructed in 1991, is nearing the end of its service life and has weakened to the extent that only one vehicle is currently allowed to cross at a time.
Describing the bridge as the “only lifeline” connecting Niuland district with Dimapur, Chümoukedima, Wokha, Kohima and neighbouring Assam, the GB body shared that thousands of commuters depend on it daily, including office-goers, traders and students travelling to schools and colleges.
The association cautioned that any failure of the bridge could severely disrupt movement and connectivity in the district, besides posing risks to public safety.

It urged the state government to take immediate steps for construction of a new and stronger RCC bridge before any untoward incident occurs.
It added that the project would provide much-needed relief and long-term benefit to the people of Niuland and daily commuters.
Appealing for urgent intervention, the association requested the chief minister to treat the matter as genuine and approve the new bridge project during the 2026–27 financial year.
