NEIGRIHMS performs eastern India's first trans-catheter tricuspid valve repair, setting a milestone in affordable advanced cardiac care nationwide
DIMAPUR — Doctors at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) have successfully performed eastern India's first minimally invasive trans-catheter tricuspid valve repair (TTVR), saving the life of a 27-year-old woman with severe heart valve leakage and setting a new benchmark in advanced cardiac care in the Northeast.
A press release issued by the institute on Thursday stated that the complex procedure, carried out by the department of Cardiology, is only the ninth of its kind performed in the country and the first in India on a patient of such a young age.
The patient had been suffering from severe tricuspid valve leakage and intractable right-sided heart failure as a complication of open-heart surgery she underwent a decade ago to correct a congenital heart defect. It stated that a second open-heart surgery posed an extremely high risk of complications and mortality.
A multidisciplinary Heart Team led by Prof. Animesh Mishra, head of the department of Cardiology, successfully carried out the trans-catheter tricuspid valve repair with support from Prof. Manish Kapoor and Prof. Amit Malviya, in collaboration with the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) and Anaesthesia departments.
The minimally invasive intervention lasted nearly three hours, and the patient is recovering in the Intensive Cardiac Care Unit (ICCU), it added.
According to NEIGRIHMS, the procedure marks a milestone for eastern India and significantly expands access to advanced cardiac care in the Northeast. The institute also claimed the treatment was performed at less than half the cost incurred at other centres in the country, making it more affordable for patients requiring complex valve interventions.
