Nagaland University's School of Agricultural Sciences holds poultry production training in Medziphema to boost self-sufficiency.

DIMAPUR — The Farmers’ Cell of the School of Agricultural Sciences (SAS), Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus, conducted a five-day hands-on training programme on poultry production technology from June 1 to the 5th.
According to a press release, the training aimed to equip farmers, youth, and aspiring entrepreneurs with scientific knowledge and practical skills in poultry production to enable them to pursue poultry farming as a sustainable livelihood in Nagaland.
Speaking at the valedictory programme, Dr. Mary N. Odyuo, Associate Professor and In-charge of the Farmers' Cell, noted that despite the growing demand for poultry products in the state, local farmers and entrepreneurs face challenges such as limited access to technical knowledge, disease management, inadequate housing, and lack of exposure to modern poultry production technologies. She added that the training sought to bridge these gaps.
Catherine Rutsa, Head of the Department of Livestock Production and Management, highlighted the importance of conducting skill development and capacity-building programmes for youth in the livestock and poultry sectors. Expressing optimism, she noted the proactive engagement of the 12 participants and stated that some were already involved in poultry farming while others would soon venture into the sector.

Congratulating the Farmers’ Cell, Dipak Sinha, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus, pointed out that Nagaland remains heavily dependent on imports to meet its high demand for meat and animal-based products. He stated that such training initiatives play a crucial role in enhancing local production and self-sufficiency.
He suggested designing separate training programmes for experienced farmers and beginners to better address their specific needs. He also proposed involving financial institutions to create awareness about credit facilities and loan schemes and suggested establishing a community radio platform for experts to directly address farmers' queries.
During the valedictory session, participants shared their experiences, describing the practical sessions as a valuable learning opportunity.
The training was conducted in collaboration with the Department of Livestock Production and Management, covering intensive practical sessions on poultry housing, brooding and chick management, feeding practices, disease prevention, vaccination, record-keeping, and enterprise management.
