Naga Students' Federation seeks termination of NIT Nagaland Director, citing alleged criminal proceedings and administrative concerns, while seeking action against Registrar
DIMAPUR — The Naga Students' Federation (NSF) has called for the termination of NIT Nagaland Director Dr. A Elayaperumal within 30 days and urged the Union Ministry of Education to act against the institute’s Registrar, whom it claimed was suspended earlier this month but continues to attend the institute.
In a representation to the secretary of Ministry of Education, Government of India, the NSF raised concerns over the administration and functioning of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Nagaland and sought urgent intervention to restore what it described as transparency, accountability and effective institutional governance.
The student body cited vigilance proceedings initiated by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), Tamil Nadu, against Elayaperumal, which it said were reported in national print media in November 2025.
The NSF further claimed that a criminal case and FIR had subsequently been registered in connection with alleged cheating, collusion and corruption in a “ghost faculty” matter involving officials of Anna University, with Elayaperumal named in the FIR.

The federation, however, asked the Ministry to verify the official status of the case and examine whether it had any bearing on his appointment or continuation as director of an Institution of National Importance.
It also questioned whether the requisite vigilance clearance and No Objection Certificate from his parent institution, reportedly Anna University, had been obtained before his appointment and assumption of charge. The Ministry was requested to verify the relevant appointment and service records.
The NSF raised further concerns over the director’s alleged accessibility and prolonged absence from the institute, and asked the Ministry to examine his attendance, official tour and leave records, student grievance records and overall administrative functioning.
It also alleged that annual reports for 2024-25 and 2025-26 were not available, while infrastructure projects had been delayed and communication concerning seminars, scholarships, workshops and other academic opportunities had been inadequate or late.
The federation further claimed that the director had not conducted meetings of the board of governors for the past 10 months.
On students’ academic interests, the NSF raised concern over the delay in holding convocations and issuing degrees.
According to the representation, the last convocation of NIT Nagaland was held in 2023, while subsequent graduating batches were still awaiting their degrees. It stated that the delay was affecting students’ employment, higher education, competitive examinations and professional opportunities.
The NSF urged the Ministry to ascertain the reasons for the delay and fix responsibility for any administrative failure.
The federation asked the Ministry to initiate appropriate disciplinary and administrative proceedings against Elayaperumal and terminate him from the post of Director, NIT Nagaland, under the applicable rules.
It specifically requested that, where warranted and in the institutional and public interest, the Ministry initiate the termination process within 30 days of receiving its representation.
The NSF also called for action against NIT Nagaland Registrar Dr. Manoj E Prabhakar, who it said was suspended by the chairman of NIT-Nagaland board of governors on August 5.
According to the federation, the suspension order cited non-cooperation, incompetence and failure to perform duties as registrar and member secretary of the board of governors.
The NSF claimed that despite the suspension order, Prabhakar continued to attend and remain present at the institute.
It urged the Ministry to intervene and ensure strict compliance with the suspension order, and sought his immediate removal from NIT Nagaland along with appropriate disciplinary action under the applicable rules.
The federation stated that Prabhakar is on deputation to NIT Nagaland from Nagaland University.
The NSF also urged the Ministry to ensure protection from retaliation or victimisation for students, faculty and other stakeholders participating in any inquiry, and to safeguard their academic interests.
It called for an impartial examination of the issues raised and said the institute should be administered in accordance with the standards of transparency, accountability, academic integrity and institutional governance expected of an Institution of National Importance.
