DIMAPUR — Under the initiative of the National Commission for Women (NCW) and the Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW), in collaboration with the district administration, ‘Mahila Jan Sunwai’ (public hearing) was held in Zunheboto, Niuland and Wokha districts on on March 9 and the 10th.
Niuland: Mahila Jan Sunwai was held at the DC’s conference hall. Kekhrienuo Meyase, member of NSCW, highlighted that the event was organised to provide women with a direct accessible platform to voice their grievances and seek institutional support in regards to domestic violence, works harassment, maternity benefits, abandonment, trafficking and other forms of gender based injustice, a DIPR report stated.
She also mentioned that the churches should play a critical role in eradicating the social evils in the society, and urged the leaders of women organisations not to take law into their hand and discourage them to recourse to customary laws.
Resource persons Alika Awomi, centre administrator at Sakhi-One Stop Centre, Niuland, and Khumchuba, panel lawyer at Dimapur District Legal Services Authority, also highlighted the role of their respective branches.

CDPO Niuland Benjamin Sema chaired the meeting, while S Botoka Jimo, specialist in Financial Literacy, DHEW Niuland proposed the vote of thanks.
Zunheboto: The programme, held at the DC’s conference hall, Zunheboto, on March 9 where centre administrator of Sakhi-OSC, Alovini Yeptho highlighted the grievances and challenges faced by women in the district, while retainer lawyer of ZDLSA, Easter H Yeptho spoke on legal challenges and issues concerning women and emphasised the importance of legal awareness and support mechanisms.
Member NSCW Kekhrienuo Meyase also addressed the gathering and interacted with participants regarding issues affecting women and the measures available for their protection and empowerment.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Viveni Yeptho, gender specialist of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) initiative Zunheboto.
Wokha: The public hearing was conducted at DC’s conference hall, Wokha, on March 9, commemorating International Women’s Day and reinforcing the collective commitment towards women’s safety, dignity, and access to justice.
The hearing was chaired by NSCW member Akokla Longchar. In her address, she highlighted the problems faced by women in different walks of life, including domestic violence, sexual abuse, early teenage pregnancy, verbal abuse, and workplace harassment.
Longchar noted that such issues affect not only women and girls but also society as a whole, including men. She emphasised the importance of awareness about legal safeguards that protect women’s rights, prevent violence, and ensure justice.
She further urged that women organisations should play a distinctive role in educating citizens and creating awareness among both genders about these legal protections.
During the event, Sakhi-One Stop Centre, Wokha, referred two cases for hearing to the member of the Nagaland State Commission for Women.
The week-long nationwide public hearing drive aims to provide women with a direct and accessible platform to voice grievances and seek institutional support.
Complaints related to domestic violence, workplace harassment, maternity benefits, abandonment, trafficking, and other forms of gender-based injustice are being heard and addressed.
