Nagaland begins process to reconstitute village councils for 2026–2031 tenure; new members to be selected before April 30, 2026.

KOHIMA — Nagaland government has initiated the process for the constitution of new village councils across recognised villages in the state for the 2026–2031 tenure.
In a notification issued on Monday, Principal Secretary for Home Abhijit Sinha stated that the tenure of the present village councils will end in the coming months and all recognised villages have been directed to select new members in accordance with the Nagaland Village and Tribal Councils Act, 1978.
The notification stated that deputy commissioners of the respective districts will issue detailed directives to recognised villages under their jurisdiction for the selection of new village council members within 15 days, in line with Rule 3 of the Nagaland Village and Area Councils Rules, 1979.

It further stated that the selection process should follow the prevailing customary practices and usages of the respective villages.
According to the notification, the entire process of selecting new village council members is to be completed before April 30, 2026.
The proposed list of members of the newly constituted village councils will be submitted to the state government through the office of the Commissioner, Nagaland, for approval by May 5, 2026.
