Kohima Science College Jotsoma’s Zoology department holds a community extension programme in Mima village, teaching vermicompost management to local SHGs.

DIMAPUR — The Zoology department of Kohima Science College, Jotsoma (KSCJ), organised its annual community extension programme "Practical lessons on management of vermicompost unit" on May 27 at the Mima village panchayat hall.
An update from the college stated that a total of 24 participants from various self-help groups (SHG) gained hands-on skills in sustainable waste management.
It stated that resource persons from KSCJ’s Zoology department spoke on the setting up of a vermicompost unit and maintenance. It added that the hands-on session enabled participants to practise composting techniques using live earthworm cultures.
Besides, a dedicated question-and-answer session was held which addressed field-specific challenges faced by SHGs. Participants also discussed scalability, nutrient optimisation and market linkages for organic produce.

The trip was led by associate professor Dr. Lilongchem Thyug along with other faculty members, namely Dr. Ruokuovikho Dominic and Rusokhrienuo Theunuo and research scholars Temjensosang and Pelesano Kin.
According to Dr. Thyug, the annual initiative bridged academic expertise with grassroots action, empowering communities toward eco-friendly livelihoods. He added that KSCJ is committed to expanding such outreach programmes across Nagaland.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Thyug.
