INTACH Nagaland Chapter organises an endangered craft workshop on traditional Ao Changki pottery in Chümoukedima.

DIMAPUR — The INTACH Nagaland Chapter, in collaboration with the North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC) under the Ministry of Culture, conducted a special Endangered Craft Workshop on traditional Ao Changki pottery at the NEZCC complex in Chümoukedima on Wednesday.
According to an update, the workshop brought together 97 students from eight schools to learn about and engage with the traditional craft, which is currently at risk of disappearing.
The participating schools were Charis High Academy, The Maple Tree School, Ram Janaki Higher Secondary School, Christian Higher Secondary School, Little Star Higher Secondary School, Bethesda Higher Secondary School, Amazing School, and Eklavya Model Residential School.
The programme provided students with an opportunity to learn directly from two skilled artisans of Changki village, reputed historically for earthen pottery, who demonstrated traditional techniques, processes, and skills.
Through hands-on learning and interaction, students engaged in making pottery while gaining appreciation of the craftsmanship passed down through generations. The initiative aimed to create awareness among youth on preserving endangered traditional crafts and their associated knowledge systems.

The workshop also featured a lecture by Jungmayangla Longkumer from the Department of Agricultural Extension Education, Nagaland University, Medziphema, who has extensively documented Changki pottery.
Through shared accounts and experiences, she connected the craft with its heritage, explaining its cultural significance, history, and place within the community.
All participating students received participation certificates from NEZCC Deputy Director Oliver T Pongen. Images of the best three works from the workshop were selected for onwards submission to INTACH HECS Delhi to be included in the national archive and awarded special certificates.
