Kohima Law College volunteers conduct a legal awareness drive on key laws under NSLSA in Kohima.

DIMAPUR — Para Legal Volunteers (PLVs) of Kohima Law College, functioning under the aegis of the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA), conducted a legal awareness drive and distributed legal literature pamphlets to the public in Kohima on Wednesday.
Addressing the PLVs, NSLSA Member Secretary Neiko Akami stated that the volunteers have been entrusted with disseminating information on four important laws: the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act, 1989; the Consumer Protection Act, 2019; Nagaland Money Lenders Act, 2005; and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002.
According to an update, Akami said the legal literature published by the NSLSA has been prepared in an accessible format to enable the public to acquire basic knowledge of laws and understand their rights and responsibilities.
He observed that despite the existence of laws governing money lending and the prevention of money laundering, public awareness regarding their provisions and legal implications remains limited. Pointing to the practice of lending money at high interest rates as an ongoing issue in the state, he stressed the need for greater awareness of the legal framework governing such transactions.

On consumer protection, Akami noted that awareness of consumer rights remains inadequate, despite protections guaranteed under the law. He stressed that consumers need to understand their rights while purchasing goods and services, as well as the legal remedies available in cases of unfair trade practices, defective goods, or deficient services.
He also pointed out the importance of awareness regarding the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act, particularly in view of continuous concerns surrounding liquor-related issues in the state. He added that wider public understanding of the provisions of the legislation is crucial in the larger interest of society.
More than 20 PLVs participated in the awareness drive, which recorded around 600 beneficiaries.
