DIMAPUR — Multiple institutions in Chümoukedima and Longleng organised farewell, academic and youth-focused programmes.
Patkai Christian College: The Reading and Writing Club of Patkai Christian College (Autonomous) organised an academic engagement session on the topic "Neoliberalism and the making of the self: From Chile to the burnout society" at the college's conference hall on April 15.
Aloyeno H Zhimo, speaking on the occasion, highlighted the objectives of the club. She stated that the club aims to promote critical thinking, encourage engagement with scholarly ideas, and integrate faith with academics.
The speaker for the session, Dr. Imlisunep, Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics, pointed out that neoliberalism is not just an economic policy but also a broader system influencing political, social, and individual life.
He traced its origins to the 1930s and discussed its development through key intellectual movements and institutions, including the 1938 Colloque Walter Lippmann in Paris and the 1947 Mont Pelerin Society.
Dr. Imlisunep highlighted how Milton Friedman played a central role in developing neoliberal ideas advocating a competitive free market, privatisation, and individual liberty as essential for a free society.
He explained how, over time, these ideas have shaped modern society to what scholars call an "achievement society", where individuals constantly push themselves to succeed. This often leads to stress, anxiety, and burnout, as people begin to measure their worth based on productivity and success.
A question-and-answer session followed, where participants discussed the effects of neoliberalism on society.
Key points included the balance between self-improvement and self-exploitation, the role of structural inequalities, and the increasing influence of market logic in everyday life. The discussion also brought to light how modern individuals often internalise pressure, leading to stress and emotional exhaustion.
NEISSR: The North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR), Chümoukedima, organised a formal programme at BAM Hall during an official inspection visit by a team from Nagaland University, Lumami.
The inspection team comprised Temjensosang of the Department of Sociology and Dr. Arjun Das of the Department of Mass Communication.
According to an update, the programme brought to light the institute’s academic achievements, vision, and future expansion plans.
Dr. Fr. CP Anto, Principal of NEISSR, announced the expansion of the Bachelor of Social Work programme into a four-year course and the introduction of a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communication.
Temjensosang appreciated NEISSR’s role in promoting peace and shaping young minds. Speaking on the vision of the National Education Policy 2020, he stressed the shift from rote learning to skill-orientated education, an approach that NEISSR had already embraced well before the policy’s introduction.
He called for greater youth empowerment through the discovery and nurturing of talents, pointing out that individuals are shaped by values and influences rather than their origins. He encouraged students to engage in self-reflection and continuous skill development as the foundation for progress and holistic growth.
Dr. Arjun Das remarked that while inspections assess infrastructure and systems, it is the vision and mindset of an institution that truly determine its success.
Speaking on the proposed Journalism and Mass Communication programme, Dr. Das underscored the urgent need for ethical and responsible media professionals in an era marked by misinformation and declining trust in mainstream media.
St. Joseph University: St. Joseph University at Ikishe Model Village, Chümoukedima, organised the Ignite Fest 2026 on April 15 and 16 on the theme “Igniting innovation & excellence”.
Organised by the Department of Management Association, the two-day fest witnessed participation from students across various departments.
The inaugural programme was attended by V Khekato Awomi, President of BJYM Nagaland and Councillor of Dimapur Municipal Council, as the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion, he encouraged young people to embrace leadership roles with confidence and purpose.
He stated that youth should not be seen as inexperienced but as a force of energy, innovation, and determination. “Today is my turn, tomorrow is yours. This is your moment,” he said. He urged young individuals to break stereotypes, step forward without hesitation, and actively participate in shaping the future.
Speaking on the importance of responsibility and purposeful leadership, the chief guest encouraged students to speak up, get involved, and not wait for opportunities, reminding them that their time is now.
Citing the example of Balendra Shah, Mayor of Kathmandu, he illustrated how youth can challenge traditional norms and prove that leadership is defined by vision, courage, and action rather than age.
He further stressed that excellence is achieved through consistency, hard work, and a constant desire to improve, adding that challenges should inspire rather than intimidate.
The event also featured sessions by guest speakers Arinjay Jain, proprietor of Royaloak Dimapur, and Chumroba J Sangtam, founder of Key Stone Coaching Institute. Arinjay Jain delivered a speech underlining the importance of innovation, excellence, and self-reliance among young people.
He also advised students not to depend solely on government jobs for their future. While acknowledging the popularity of such career paths, he pointed out the importance of gaining practical experience and keeping alternative career options open.
The fest showcased a wide range of events designed to nurture both academic and extracurricular excellence. Major competitions included a business plan, mock interview, business quiz, extempore, ceo challenge, debate, and reel-making competition.
It also featured cultural and other activities such as ignite voice, dance competition, cosplay, mad ads, food challenge, arm wrestling, e-sports, and Mr. and Miss Ignite.
