Dimapur municipal employees threaten indefinite strike over unpaid salaries, EPF dues

DIMAPUR — Employees of Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) have once again threatened to launch an indefinite “no pay, no work” agitation from September 8.

In an ultimatum to the DMC chief executive officer on Monday, the Dimapur Municipal Council Employees’ Welfare Union (DMCEWU) demanded immediate payment of outstanding salaries, pending Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) contributions, leave encashment and other staff dues.

It stated that the employees have resolved to observe a pen-down strike from September 2. According to the union, if no concrete action is taken by September 7, they will begin an indefinite “no pay, no work” agitation from September 8.

The union warned that the proposed agitation would result in the cessation of sanitation and other public services being performed by the employees.

In its ultimatum, the DMCEWU stated that repeated representations, meeting minutes, resolutions and appeals had failed to elicit a “concrete or satisfactory response” from the authority.

It claimed that the prolonged non-payment of salaries and other legitimate dues had caused financial hardship and distress to employees and their families, while the staff had continued to discharge their duties.

The union stated that its general body meeting on August 31 discussed the situation in detail and unanimously resolved to proceed with the phased agitation.

The employees have demanded the immediate payment of all outstanding salaries; clearance and deposit of pending EPF contributions; payment of leave encashment; settlement of other admissible staff benefits and dues; and a definite, time-bound schedule for clearing all outstanding employee-related liabilities.
