DIMAPUR — The Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) will host the inaugural “Run for Clean Dimapur” on September 27 as part of the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP).

The announcement was made by DMC Chief Executive Officer Thungchanbemo Tungoe during a press conference at the DMC office, Forest Colony, Dimapur, on Tuesday.

He stated that the event is being organised in collaboration with the district administration, Development Authority of Nagaland, Department of Environment and Climate Change, Nagaland Pollution Control Board, National Youth Climate Consortium (NYCC), and several NGOs, including Earth Alliance, Pro Rural, Team Better Dimapur, and CanYouth.

According to him, the marathon aims to raise awareness on air pollution, promote cleanliness initiatives, encourage collective action for a healthier city, and engage youth in sustainable development.

Tungoe added that the event would also highlight reducing particulate matter through greening measures such as tree plantation and urban forestry.

The run will be flagged off from Urban Haat, Dimapur, at 5 am. It will consist of four categories: 8 km open for men and women and 4 km junior for boys and girls. The route will cover Purana Bazar, Burma Camp, Khermahal, and Clock Tower before culminating outside the DMC office.

The winners in the open category will receive INR 15,000 and INR 10,000, while junior winners will get INR 10,000 and INR 5,000 respectively.

Registration is open with a fee of INR 300 for the open category, while juniors can register free of cost.

Tungoe appealed to all the citizens, especially the youth of Dimapur and beyond, to join the marathon and make it a mass movement and added that Dimapur belongs to everyone and if they work together for a cleaner and greener Dimapur, they can breathe fresh air and secure a better future.

Reiterates fire extinguisher rule

Responding to queries after the press conference about the DMC order mandating fire extinguishers in shops and establishments, Tungoe said the initiative has received widespread support and appreciation from various organisations.

He further explained that the order was made mandatory purely for safety reasons, noting that fire extinguishers can help control minor outbreaks before they escalate and cause major damage to property.

While the DMC continues its efforts to keep the city and markets clean, he emphasised that success cannot be achieved without the collective support of citizens. It stressed that maintaining a safe and clean Dimapur is not the sole responsibility of the DMC but a shared duty of every resident.

On the question of deadlines, the CEO assured that adequate time would be given for installation, after which inspections would be conducted and necessary action taken against non-compliance.

While responding to complaints from shopkeepers about expired extinguishers, he clarified that every establishment must maintain a functional fire extinguisher, and outdated ones must be replaced.
