DIMAPUR — The Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen Federation (DUCCF) has emphasised the importance of fire safety measures in business establishments and public spaces while urging clarity in enforcement responsibilities.
In a statement, DUCCF acknowledged that fire extinguishers are vital equipment for safeguarding lives and property and expressed full support for their proper installation and maintenance.
However, it stated that the responsibility for ensuring fire safety, including the inspection, monitoring, and maintenance of fire extinguishers, should primarily rest with the Fire and Emergency Services Department.
According to DUCCF, the Fire Brigade is the competent authority with the expertise to enforce fire safety norms, conduct inspections, and provide training on fire prevention and response.

While appreciating the concern of the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) on public safety, DUCCF said that enforcement should be coordinated closely with the Fire department to avoid overlapping checks and compliance from multiple agencies.
The federation further urged the authorities to adopt a balanced approach by also addressing civic necessities such as sanitation, drainage, traffic management, and hygiene, which remain pressing concerns for traders and the public. It stated that a healthy and safe business environment can only be achieved through cooperation between all responsible departments.
DUCCF appealed to the DMC and the Fire and Emergency Services Department to streamline responsibilities and work together for the safety and welfare of the people of Dimapur.
