Dimapur authorities warn against dumping animal carcasses in public places, citing health risks and threatening penal action against violators
DIMAPUR — Authorities in Dimapur have warned residents against dumping dead animals and carcasses along roadsides, drains, rivers and other public places, citing public health and environmental risks.
In a notice issued on Thursday, the chief veterinary officer (CVO), Dimapur, said indiscriminate disposal of animal carcasses had been reported in and around Dimapur district and could create unhygienic conditions, environmental pollution and risks of zoonotic diseases.
The notice cited diseases including anthrax, rabies and avian influenza, and described the improper disposal of carcasses as a biohazard and a nuisance to the public.

It directed all concerned to refrain from dumping animal carcasses in public places with immediate effect.
The CVO advised that dead animals be disposed of through deep burial with lime, away from water sources and human habitation. Farm and slaughter waste, meanwhile, should be disposed of within farm premises or at designated dumping sites.
Anyone found dumping carcasses in public places could face penal action under relevant provisions of the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009, the notice warned.
The authorities also sought the cooperation of the public, gaon buras, village councils, colony chairmen and NGOs to curb the practice and ensure responsible disposal of animal carcasses.
