WOKHA — The Nagaland State Seed Farm at Merapani in Wokha district continues to face protests and agitation from across the Assam side, with demonstrators claiming that the farm falls within the neighbouring state.
Official records show that the seed farm was established in 1969 under the seed production programme and the integrated cereals development programme of Nagaland government.
A fresh protest was reported on Saturday, February 14, when around 30 people gathered at the farm and prevented government agencies from laying the foundation for a godown intended for storing seeds and grains.
Speaking over the phone, H Lawrence, deputy director of the State Seed Farm at Merapani, said that such incidents have become frequent, with groups repeatedly assembling to obstruct routine activities at the farm.

He alleged that the protesters’ objective was to forcibly occupy the seed farm, thereby disrupting its functioning.
Lawrence said that on February 16, the district administration, police and CRPF personnel, along with the chairman of Merapani foothills area, visited the farm to assess the situation.
He informed that the protesters attempted to obstruct officials during the visit as well.
The official further stated that fencing and proper utilisation of the farm land have remained a challenge for several years due to recurring disturbances.
Meanwhile, it was learned that a border magistrate-level meeting between Nagaland and Assam is scheduled to be held on Tuesday.
