KOHIMA — The Angami tribe won the State-level Tribal Tug-of-War Competition organised by the Tribal Research Institute (TRI), Nagaland, Department of Tribal Affairs, on Monday.
The event was held at Naga Solidarity Park, Kohima, and funded by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs. It was part of the Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh Pakhwada 2025 commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Birsa Munda.
The two-time defending champion, the Chakhesang tribe, emerged as the first runner-up, while the Zeliang tribe secured the second runner-up position after defeating the Sumi tribe.
A total of 14 tribes participated in the competition. Member of Legislative Assembly Imtichoba attended the occasion as the guest of honour.
K Ongli Chang, project officer, Department of Tribal Affairs, informed that Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas is the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda, the tribal freedom fighter, and is celebrated every year.

He said this year holds special significance as it marks 150 years of Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas across India and in Nagaland, where various activities are being organised to commemorate the occasion. He added that the competition is one of the main events, with participation from representatives of 14 tribes, alongside a tribal arts and crafts exhibition and a blood donation camp.
Ongli further informed that the government of India has declared that the celebration should be observed from November 1 to 15, and it is being observed across the country.
Later, I S Phom, director of Tribal Affairs, Government of Nagaland, presented the prizes to the winners in the presence of the president of the Nagaland Tug-of-War Association (NTWA), Vekho Swuro.
Officials of the NTWA administered the oath to the players and officiated the matches.
