DIMAPUR — The Wokha Town Council (WTC) undertook an initiative to clear waste near First Cry Shop along NH-2 in Wokha town due to waterlogging and the overflow of drainage.
In a press release, the WTC stated that the action was prompted by the persistent issues of waterlogging and the overflowing of waste, which have been exacerbated by improper waste disposal practices by local residents.
The WTC termed the situation as man-made catastrophe resulting from the non-compliance of residents who have been dumping waste along the drainage systems.
It urged all community members to participate in keeping the environment clean and to report any instances of dumping of waste in drainage systems.

The council also stated that it has come to its notice that the drainage infrastructure constructed by the concerned contractors does not meet the necessary standards, leading to frequent water logging and overflowing of storm water drainage during the monsoon season.
According to WTC, this recurring problem poses significant risks to public health and safety, disrupts daily activities, and causes damage to local infrastructure.
“Given that the monsoon period is approaching, we urge the Department of National Highways to take swift action to address these issues.
Specifically, we request that, the department engage qualified experts to evaluate the current state of the drainage system and identify those strategic locations that need urgent attention.
“We believe that prompt action on these matters is essential to improve the drainage system's effectiveness and ensure the safety and well-being of Wokha residents during the upcoming monsoon,” the release added.
