World Rabies Day observed in Longleng district with awareness sessions and free anti-rabies vaccination drives.

DIMAPUR — World Rabies Day was observed in Longleng district by the District Surveillance Unit, Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) Longleng, in collaboration with the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary.
According to an update, the programme was held at Sakshi village in Longleng on September 25 and at Tamlu Community Health Centre on September 26 on the theme "Act now: you, me and community".
On the occasion, Dr. O Kupmei Phom, veterinary assistant surgeon, spoke on the importance of vaccination, preventive measures, and treatment methods. She said that rabies has no treatment but is preventable through vaccination; therefore, the annual vaccination of pets is very important.

Awareness and management sessions were conducted by Dr. K Manan Phom, district surveillance officer, who stressed that the observance aims to promote the fight against rabies and create awareness of its prevention. He said rabies is a fatal but preventable viral disease spread to people through the saliva of an infected animal.
He spoke on key aspects, including mass dog vaccination to cut off transmission, post-exposure prophylaxis, and community awareness on prevention and recognising rabies symptoms. The programme concluded with a free anti-rabies vaccination drive.
