Nagaland observed World Mental Health Day 2025 across districts to raise awareness on access to mental health services during crises.

DIMAPUR — World Mental Health Day 2025 was observed on October 10 across multiple districts and institutions in Nagaland on the theme “Access to services – mental health in catastrophes and emergencies”.
The events aimed to raise awareness of mental health issues, highlight the need for accessible services, and promote resilience and recovery during crises.
Kohima: The District Mental Health Programme (DMHP), Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK), in collaboration with the Department of Psychology, Sazolie College, Phezhu Jotsoma; the Department of Education, St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Jakhama; and Oriental College, Kohima, marked the day with sessions led by resource persons Ruokuotuonuo Rutsa, clinical psychologist, DMHP, NHAK, and Veronica Nriame, psychiatric social worker, DMHP, NHAK.

According to an update, the resource persons emphasised that the objective of the observance was to raise awareness and mobilise global efforts in support of mental health.
They elaborated on the year’s theme, explaining that crises such as natural disasters, conflicts, and public health emergencies cause emotional distress, with one in five individuals experiencing mental health conditions.
Stressing the importance of protecting mental well-being during global instability, they said supporting individuals in crises saves lives and helps communities recover and rebuild. Stress management and mental health well-being were also discussed.
The Department of Psychology, Nagaland University, also commemorated the day by organising ‘PSYCHSPARK’, a mental health fest featuring reels, posters, and film competitions.
A programme held at Kohima Campus featured Prof. N Venuh, pro vice-chancellor, as the special guest. He encouraged the gathering to find peace through healthy coping mechanisms. Dr. Hovisuto Khieya, JRF under a DRDO project, discussed the mental health challenges faced during conflicts and emergencies.
A highlight of the event was the screening of the short film “Eunoia”, created by the department to spread awareness about mental health care and encourage open conversations.
Longleng: In Longleng, the DMHP, in collaboration with the Longleng District Legal Services Authority (LDLSA), observed the day at the VCC and VDB Hall.
Dr. Lipok Phom, nodal officer, DMHP, District Hospital Longleng, spoke on factors influencing mental health and emphasised the crucial role of community leaders in creating awareness and providing support during emergencies.
He elaborated on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among frontline workers and the importance of timely psychological intervention. P Monyei Phom, deputy legal aid defence counsel, spoke on the rights of persons with mental illness and stressed the need for legal protection and community support.
Tuensang: IN Tuensang, the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) observed World Mental Health Day at the DIET Hall on October 10.
Dr. Renemlila, lecturer, delivered the keynote address on the theme and explained the concept of mental health through the three C’s — causes, consequences, and control — and reminded educators of their role in fostering emotional resilience.
Principal Peter Libenthung shared a story emphasising empathy and mental well-being.
