The Department of Environment, Forests and Climate Change held a World Environment Day essay competition in Kohima.

DIMAPUR — As part of the World Environment Day celebration, the Department of Environment, Forests and Climate Change organised an essay competition on the theme "Inspired by nature. For climate. For our future".
The competition was held at the conference hall of the Forest Office Complex in Kohima on June 3.
Welcoming the students, Divisional Forest Officer, Kohima, Dr. Sevono Seletsu encouraged the participants to broaden their thoughts and express their ideas freely and confidently. Wishing them the best, she motivated the students to make use of the opportunity and give their best effort throughout the competition.
Addressing the students after the competition, Chief Conservator of Forests (P&D) of the Department of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Sidramappa M Chalkapure, said that World Environment Day is celebrated in many ways by various organisations. He urged the students to understand and create awareness about the implications of dealing with the environment on human beings.
He also expressed gratitude to all the participating schools and teachers for their participation, adding that beyond competitions, students and teachers must spread the message of conservation and how climate change is impacting lives. He highlighted that people must learn how to conserve natural resources, citing simple practices like switching off lights when not in use and using public transport as steps towards environmental betterment.

Six schools from Kohima took part in the essay competition, with five students participating from each school. The schools included Fernwood School, Rev. Dr. Neiliezhü Usou Memorial School, Mezhür Higher Secondary School, Ministers Hill Baptist Higher Secondary School, Dainty Buds School, and Little Flower Higher Secondary School.
The winners of the essay competition are Rahrane Bethel Zhoh of Class 9, Mezhür Higher Secondary School in first place; Livana K Zhimomi of Class 10, Fernwood School in second place; and Keduvinu Kharutso of Class 10, Little Flower Higher Secondary School in third place.
Prizes for the essay competition winners will be awarded by Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change and Village Guards CL John on the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5 at the Kohima Peace Memorial and Eco Park in Kohima.
