WOKHA — A consultative meeting-cum-capacity-building workshop on floriculture and apiculture was conducted at the DC’s Conference Hall, Wokha, on Wednesday.
The programme was organised in collaboration with the district administration and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)–North East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST), Jorhat.
During the event, farmers received training in modern beekeeping techniques, including the use of improved honeybee boxes and essential equipment.
Officials highlighted that while traditional local boxes allow only two harvests annually, modern bee boxes developed at NEIST enable up to eight harvests a year. To bridge this gap, farmers were taught low-cost methods of making effective bee boxes and were also provided with improved, affordable boxes to enhance productivity.

NEIST officials conducted field inspections, offering hands-on guidance and assessing on-ground practices. Farmers were trained in flower harvesting techniques, pest control methods, and seed preservation for the next plantation cycle.
Addressing the gathering, Deputy Commissioner of Wokha, Vineet Kumar, urged farmers to remain proactive in adopting improved agricultural practices. He encouraged them to actively collaborate with CSIR–NEIST, noting that Wokha is currently the only district in Nagaland working with the institute.
Expressing confidence that the collaboration could make Wokha a model district, Kumar advised farmers to make the best use of the initiative for better yields and profits. He also urged chamomile growers not to leave their land fallow after plantation but to utilise it for cultivating additional crops supported under the programme.
As part of the initiative, farmers were provided bee boxes and other essential items for beekeeping.
