Widespread damage across Nagaland as monsoon rains trigger landslides, floods

  • DIMAPUR — The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has reported widespread damage across multiple districts following heavy monsoon rains, landslides, and windstorms that have begun to affect infrastructure, homes, and agricultural land across the state.

  • According to a press release issued on Tuesday, incidents of land sinking, road blockages, collapsed retaining walls, and damaged paddy and maize fields have been reported from various parts of Nagaland. The authority has appealed to all District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) to remain on high alert during the ongoing monsoon season.

  • In Kohima district, a major land sinking was reported near Kisama Heritage Village, along with a large landslide on the Kigwema–Mima–Chakhabama road. A significant retaining wall also collapsed in Phesama village.

  • Tuensang district reported a landslide in Phingjang Ward and road blockages on Tobu Road below Tuensang village. Additionally, a windstorm damaged an Anganwadi Centre in Phir Ahir village under Longkhim sub-division.

  • In Kiphire district, multiple landslides caused road blockages between Khongiri and Mimi villages, and at Luther and Singrep villages. Landslides were also reported between 02 Junction and Pungro Town. Agricultural fields in Moya and Pungro villages suffered damage due to the heavy rains.


  • In Meluri, a guard room at the Village Guard (VG) Office was damaged by a landslide, while in Reguri village, paddy fields along the Araju River were inundated following the river's overflow. A collapsed retaining wall in Wutsi Colony also impacted a nearby residence, it said.

  • Noklak district witnessed road blockages along several key routes, including Noklak–Chingmei–Tuensang, Noklak–Pangsha, and Panso–Saddle–Tuensang roads, among others.

  • In Shamator district, a major landslide occurred along the Shamator–Kiphire road, while maize fields in Chassir village were extensively damaged by windstorms and torrential rain.

  • Mokokchung district reported the collapse of a retaining wall in Mongsenbai Ward, damaging a residential house. Similar damage was reported from Luyong Ward in Mangkolemba sub-division, where another collapsed retaining wall affected a footpath and three houses.

  • In Wokha, strong cyclonic winds uprooted several electric poles, disrupting power supply. A landslide at the Tribal Circuit in Doyang affected a reception and cafeteria building.

Other reports included landslides in Atoizu sub-division of Zunheboto district and road blockages between Vamsi Akilesh and New Ngaulong in Peren district.


  • The NSDMA has urged local authorities and DDMAs to maintain vigilance and take necessary precautions to safeguard lives and property during the ongoing extreme weather conditions.
