Health department in Peren organises sensitisation programme on food safety

DIMAPUR — In a move to bolster community health and nutrition, Peren division of Health department conducted a comprehensive food safety sensitisation programme in four villages namely Ahthibung, Samziuram, Mhainamtsi and Heningkunglwa on May 14 and 15.
An update from the chief medical officer (CMO), Peren, stated that the programme was conducted under the "Eat Right India" movement aimed at bridging the gap between national health goals and grassroots implementation.
It stated that Sukumlo Yanthan, food safety officer from Dimapur, highlighted on food fortification and elaborated on how staple foods such as rice, wheat, milk and oil are being enriched with essential vitamins and minerals.

The session emphasised on the three-pronged reduction strategy of reducing salt, sugar and oil.
It stated that the participants were educated on the ill effects of trans fats.
In the second session Zuthungbemo K Ngullie, food technician, focused on the necessity of reading food labels and clarified on common misconceptions regarding medically recommended ORS versus commercially marketed ORSL drinks.
The technical session further delved into the repeated use of cooking oil and explained how the buildup of total polar compounds (TCP) could lead to severe health complications. Participants were also made known on the alarming sugar levels in carbonated beverages linking to the rising incidence of Type 2 diabetes in children.
The programme concluded with hands-on demonstration to detect common adulterants in everyday food items.
The programme witnessed active participation of village council members, ASHAS, Anganwadi workers, SHGs and church leaders.
