DIMAPUR — R Sopu Metha, a veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader in Nagaland and a decorated war veteran, passed away on Tuesday. He was 77.
Widely regarded as a distinguished public figure, Metha was not only a prominent political leader but also a committed social worker. His contributions to the BJP in Nagaland and his active involvement in community development earned him wide respect across political lines.
Before venturing into politics, Metha served in the armed forces and was awarded the Ashoka Chakra for his acts of valour and service to the nation. He was also a founding figure in the establishment of Sovima village and remained closely involved in its development over the years.
Reacting to the news of his passing, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio expressed deep sorrow and remembered Metha as a senior leader of integrity and a long-time friend. In a condolence message, Rio noted that despite occasional political differences, he always held Metha in high regard for his distinguished service to the Naga people and the country.
“We have also shared a long and close friendship… each of which holds special meaning for me and my family,” the chief minister stated, acknowledging their personal and familial ties as well.
Rio said Metha’s passing was a profound loss to the people of Nagaland, particularly the Sovima community, and highlighted his legacy of service, courage, and leadership.
“He always had my respect as a senior and dedicated leader of the masses,” he added.
Offering condolences on behalf of his family, Rio prayed for strength for the bereaved family and eternal peace for the departed soul.
