DIMAPUR — The Tribal Council, Purana Bazaar, has raised concern over what it described as a growing “public health hazard” caused by the open dumping of garbage along the National Highway and in parts of East Dimapur, urging the state government to take immediate action to establish a proper waste management system.
In a letter addressed to the advisor for Urban Development and Municipal Affairs on Thursday, the council stated that residents of East Dimapur were facing a “major crisis” due to the absence of a proper garbage disposal and waste management mechanism.
The council stated that garbage was currently being dumped openly “in the middle of the city and along the National Highway”, creating unhealthy conditions and causing inconvenience to commuters, nearby residents, shopkeepers, students and pedestrians.
It stated that the foul smell from the accumulated waste had made it difficult for people to pass through the area comfortably and warned that the situation was becoming increasingly alarming.

“The issue is not merely about cleanliness; it concerns the health, dignity, and well-being of thousands of citizens,” the release stated.
The council also said that while people had welcomed the formation of the East Dimapur Council following the urban local bodies election with hopes of improved administration and development, development should not remain limited to road and drainage construction alone.
It maintained that issues affecting public health, sanitation, environment and the quality of life of residents also required urgent attention.
Calling for immediate government intervention, the council urged the authorities to identify and acquire a permanent and scientifically managed garbage dumping and waste processing site. It also appealed for the implementation of regular garbage collection systems, sanitation monitoring and environmental safety measures without further delay.
