DIMAPUR — The Mon district administration and District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), under Mission Shakti, organised an awareness-cum-training programme on ‘Women’s safety at workplace’ at the DC’s conference hall, on September 6.
According to a DIPR report, retainer lawyer Angun Konyak and panel lawyer Helen P were the resource persons for the training programme.
Helen P spoke on the Domestic Violence Act and Immoral Traffic Prevention Act. She said that human trafficking is a significant problem in Nagaland, often taking forms that are deeply rooted in its social-cultural context.

It may not always manifest as overt, organised crime, but it thrives through subtle exploitation, particularly of children and young people, she said.
The panel lawyers also said that the problem of human trafficking in Nagaland is often less about large-scale international rings and more about exploitation that happens within or from the community itself.
She cited some specific examples, namely the ‘domestic helper trap,’ which is one of the most common problems in the Konyak society; false promises of job and education; trafficking for the ‘Glamour Industry;’ organised trafficking network; and the border problems.
She also spoke on the protection of women through the Domestic Violence Act 2005. She said one of the primary goals of the Act is to secure women’s right to obtain housing: tt provides women the right to reside in a household.
Domestic violence under the Act includes physical abuse, sexual abuse, verbal and emotional abuse, and economic abuse.
Helen also shared the legal framework and remedies available under the Act to address domestic violence.
She reminded them that it’s a landmark legislation, a tool for empowerment, and a symbol of justice. The panel lawyer encouraged them, not just to be aware of this law, but to become its advocate, educate our communities, families and children and use this powerful legal instrument.
Angun Konyak discussed the POSH Act and SHE Box, focusing on sexual harassment of women in the workplace and its prevention. Additionally, the retainer lawyer explained the role and function of Lok Adalats.
Deputy chief legal aid defence council, M Moba, discussed NALSA's role in effectively implementing poverty alleviation schemes.
The programme was chaired by Simon L Konyak, DEO, PMMVY.
