DIMAPUR — A training on grape cultivation was jointly conducted by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)-All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Fruits (Medziphema) and ICAR-National Research Centre (NRC) Grapes (Pune) at the Department of Horticulture, School of Agricultural Sciences, Nagaland University, Medziphema.
According to an update, the initiative was led by Dr. Nishant Deshmukh, Senior Scientist, and C S Maiti, Centre in-Charge, AICRP on Fruits.
The two-day intensive training programme, held on March 26 and 27, provided farmers with expertise on vineyard establishment, pruning, and canopy management tailored for northeastern conditions, including practical field demonstrations in Niuland district.
As part of the Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) programme, essential inputs related to grape cultivation along with structural materials to construct permanent trellis were distributed to the participating farmers to encourage adoption of improved practices and promote livelihood enhancement.

The programme concluded with an interactive session where participants shared their queries and experiences, reflecting a strong interest in grape cultivation as a potential avenue for agricultural diversification in Nagaland.
This initiative aimed to encourage agricultural diversification in Nagaland, with organisers highlighting the potential for growing grapes in non-traditional areas and expressing optimism for sustainable horticultural growth.
The event witnessed participation from 35 progressive farmers, 15 students and research scholars, and other stakeholders interested in diversifying horticultural practices in the state.
