Tir Yimyim celebrates 22nd anniversary with launch of Ao-English translation site

DIMAPUR — The Ao vernacular daily, Tir Yimyim, marked its 22nd anniversary at the Business Association of Nagas (BAN) Conference Hall in Dimapur. The occasion was marked by the launch of "Ao Lingo", an AI-powered translation website that enables translation between the Ao and English languages.

On the occasion, President of Ao Senso Telongjem Dimapur (ASTD), Ningsangwaba Pongen, commended Tir Yimyim Editor-in-Chief K Temjen Jamir’s leadership, humanitarian efforts, and dedication to public service.

He congratulated Tir Yimyim on its 22nd anniversary and urged Ao writers to continue creating literary works that preserve and promote the Ao language.

K Temjen Jamir reflected on the newspaper’s 22-year journey, sharing its challenges and achievements, and thanked readers and well-wishers, emphasising that “Tir Yimyim belongs to everyone”.

He also introduced the newly launched website, an AI-driven translation platform developed by Bendangnüksüng, a machine learning engineer based in Amsterdam. Jamir encouraged the community to use the site, noting that increased usage would enhance its accuracy and efficiency over time.

The Ao Lingo website was officially launched by BAN President Mongkum Jamir. SDO (Civil) Peren and Bookipedia co-founder Sentilong Ozüküm distributed prizes for the “Yimdangjem Otsü Zulu Toktep” fiction writing competition, jointly organised by Bookipedia and Tir Yimyim.

The first prize was awarded to Marnungtet Ozüküm for “Shiti”, which carried a cash award of INR 20,000 and a citation. The second prize was jointly shared by S Aosüngküm Ozüküm for “Kita Chir” and Imli P Lemtur for “Memenudang Kindangi Shilanangma”, each receiving INR 15,000.

The third prize was jointly shared by M Senthy Jamir for “Medemer Tajung Ana” and Temjentenzük for “Kiyimdang Sepokba Hon Keri Ayok”, each receiving INR 10,000.

Ozüküm expressed satisfaction with the strong participation in the writing competition and encouraged continued creative writing efforts. A video message from Bendangnüksüng, developer of Ao Lingo, was also played, urging the community to use the platform to help improve its AI capabilities.

The programme was chaired by Tir Yimyim news writer Nüngsangnükshi Jamir, with R Asenla Jamir offering the invocation and Molung Imsong presenting a special song.

The event concluded with a benediction by Maongtoshi Longshir, director of the Youth Ministry, DABA. During the programme, winners of the fiction writing competition, organised by Tir Yimyim and Bookipedia Foundation, were awarded cash prizes and certificates.
