Thirteen cattle belonging to different households were killed by a lightning strike in Mon's Longkei village.
DIMAPUR — Thirteen cattle were killed by lightning during a thunderstorm at Longkei village, located around 11 to 12 kilometres away from Mon district headquarters, on June 25.
According to an update received on Wednesday from Longkei Village Council Chairman Chingwang Konyak, the cattle were struck while grazing on the outskirts of the village at around 8 pm.
The villagers discovered the carcasses on June 28. Konyak said the lightning had caused severe injuries to some of the animals, describing it as a sight no cattle owner should have to witness. The 13 cattle belonged to 13 separate households.

He added that the cattle were left untouched as veterinary officials were required to conduct a post-mortem examination.
A veterinary team reached the village on June 29 to conduct the post-mortem examination but could not proceed as the carcasses had already decomposed.
Konyak mentioned that lightning and thunderstorms accompanied by rain had been occurring across the district for nearly a week.
