DIMAPUR — Hailing from Molungyimsen, a village in the Mokokchung district, Temsu Sanglir, also known as Joel Anthony, is currently a final-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Education at Salt Christian College, Dimapur.
While primarily focused on his academic journey, he also engages in modelling as both a side hustle and a hobby. Alongside this, he nurtures a strong personal passion for singing and music.
Pageantry, he admits, he took up to gain experience and learn from it, whether it was a win or a loss. However, with each participation, he found himself becoming more groomed, learning how personality shifts through absolute discipline—be it in dressing or behaviour. He won the title of Mr. Dimapur Season 4 in 2024, and is currently holding the title of Mr. India Universe 4th Runner-up, which he won in October 2025, held in Jaipur, Rajasthan, with a tenure valid up to October 2026.
In this interview with Eastern Mirror, Sanglir shares insights for those who might take up pageantry and what it demands.
How is pageantry (like Mr. India Universe) different from regular modelling?
Modelling and pageantry are often misunderstood as being the same, but they are fundamentally different. modelling primarily focuses on showcasing products through mediums like runway shows, photoshoots, and digital campaigns.
In regions like Nagaland, modelling is still in a developmental stage, with limited resources, exposure, and financial opportunities. As a result, many individuals currently pursue modelling as a supplementary career, hobby, or platform for public visibility rather than as a primary source of income. However, with the right exposure and growth of the industry, it holds potential to evolve into a sustainable profession.
Pageantry, however, evaluates a wider range of qualities, including personality, communication skills, confidence, talent, and social awareness. Participants are often expected to represent causes, demonstrate leadership, and engage with the community. While some individuals may participate in both fields, success in one does not automatically imply professional involvement in the other.
What qualities do judges look for in competitions?
Judges typically evaluate participants based on a combination of presentation and personal attributes. Key factors include stage presence, confidence, clarity of communication, and the ability to respond thoughtfully and respectfully under pressure.
Additionally, qualities such as authenticity, composure, and overall personality play an important role. During auditions, meeting the eligibility criteria and demonstrating potential are essential first steps for beginners entering the field.
How can a student start exploring pageantry and modelling at a young age?
Most professional pageantry and modelling opportunities have minimum age requirements, typically around 17 or 18, depending on the organisation and type of work. However, students can begin preparing earlier by developing confidence, posture, and basic runway or presentation skills.
They can also explore opportunities through online casting platforms, local events, and workshops, while ensuring they meet eligibility criteria and maintain a professional approach.

How important is physical fitness and grooming in this field?
Physical fitness and grooming are important aspects of modelling and pageantry. While there is no single standard body type required across all segments of the industry, maintaining a healthy and well-presented appearance is essential.
Grooming reflects personal discipline and attention to detail, including hygiene, styling, posture, and overall presentation. These factors contribute significantly to how an individual is perceived professionally.
What role does education play in a pageantry or modelling career?
Education plays an important role in supporting a modelling or pageantry career. While the visible aspect of the profession focuses on presentation, much of the work involves communication, awareness, and professionalism.
A strong educational background helps individuals articulate ideas clearly, understand industry expectations, and manage responsibilities effectively. It also provides stability and alternative career pathways alongside modelling.
How important is public speaking and personality development in pageants?
Public speaking and personality development are central to success in pageantry. Participants are expected to communicate clearly, express informed opinions, and represent themselves and their causes with confidence.
A titleholder is expected to represent not only themselves but also a cause, a community, and a vision for positive change. The ability to communicate confidently, express ideas clearly, and demonstrate leadership qualities plays a decisive role in earning and carrying the crown with responsibility and integrity.
What role do social media and personal branding play today?
Social media has become one of the most powerful tools in today’s digital era. It provides individuals with a platform to showcase their talent, connect with audiences, and build visibility beyond geographical limitations.
Personal branding is equally important, as it defines how an individual is perceived by the public. A strong and authentic personal brand can open doors to collaborations, sponsorships, and career opportunities. Together, social media and personal branding serve as key drivers for growth and success in the modern modeling and pageantry landscape.

What has been your biggest learning from competing at a national level?
Competing at the national level was a deeply fulfilling experience and a significant milestone in my journey. Representing my land and my people on such a platform was both an honour and a responsibility.
One of the most valuable lessons I learned was the importance of balance in character—being humble without lacking confidence, strong without arrogance, and wise without being overbearing. Above all, the experience reinforced the belief that with dedication, faith, and perseverance, even the most ambitious dreams can be achieved.
