CBCC objects to Sunday SIR exercise in Phek, saying the scheduling disregards Christian observance and religious practice
DIMAPUR — The Chakhesang Baptist Church Council (CBCC) has objected to the conduct of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) draft electoral-roll exercise in Phek district on Sunday, describing the scheduling as an affront to Christian observance.
In a statement, the church body said it was “appalled” by the decision to hold the publication of the draft electoral rolls for all four Assembly constituencies in Phek on September 20, a Sunday.
It questioned why the programme could not have been held on another day, given the significance of Sunday to Christians.
The CBCC also criticised the Election Commission of India and the authorities for going ahead with the programme despite being aware of the religious significance of the day.

The church council alleged that the scheduling interfered with religious practice and amounted to an undermining of the Christian faith. It also questioned the silence of the state government, political parties and officials on the issue.
“The Government of the day and its machineries, fully aware of Sunday being hallowed by the Christian community, going ahead to desecrate the Day of the Lord is disheartening,” the CBCC stated.
It further warned that any attempt to compel Christians to take part in activities they consider contrary to their religious observance could meet with resistance.
