By strengthening the Dr. T. Ao Trophy, the state can send a clear message that the aspirations, hard work and potential of its young footballers are valued.
The Dr. T. Ao Inter-District Football Tournament holds a special place in Nagaland’s sporting calendar. By bringing together teams and talented players from across the districts, it provides an important platform for young people to demonstrate their ability, discipline, teamwork and sporting spirit. It also honours the legacy of Dr. T. Ao, whose name continues to inspire generations.
I sincerely appreciate the efforts of the Government of Nagaland and all concerned organisations in promoting sports and preserving the state’s rich sporting traditions. Traditional sports such as Naga wrestling are an important part of our cultural heritage and deserve every encouragement. At the same time, modern competitive sports such as football also require sustained support and investment.
The recently announced prize structure has, however, prompted a reasonable discussion among sports enthusiasts. While Naga wrestling reportedly offers a cash prize of INR10 lakh, the prize money for the Dr. T. Ao Inter-District Football Tournament is INR10 3 lakh. This difference invites reflection on whether the level of financial recognition and support for the state’s premier inter-district football competition adequately reflects its scale, reach and significance.
This observation is not intended to diminish the importance of any sport or to compare the worth of one sporting community with another. Every sport has its own value, history and contribution to Nagaland. Rather, it is an appeal to ensure that football, which engages young people across districts and offers opportunities for talent development, receives appropriate attention and encouragement.
For many aspiring footballers, the Dr. T. Ao Trophy is more than a competition. It is an opportunity to represent their district, gain exposure, develop confidence and aspire to higher levels of achievement. A stronger prize structure, together with improved facilities, coaching and organisational support, would further enhance the tournament’s prestige and motivate the next generation of players.
I therefore respectfully appeal to the Government of Nagaland and the organisers to consider a gradual and meaningful enhancement of the prize money and overall support for the Dr. T. Ao Trophy. Such an initiative would be a positive investment in our young people and a fitting way to honour the legacy associated with the tournament.
Nagaland is blessed with talent in many sporting disciplines. Our goal should be to encourage all of them fairly and sustainably. By strengthening the Dr. T. Ao Trophy, the state can send a clear message that the aspirations, hard work and potential of its young footballers are valued.
Let us celebrate every sport, support every athlete and create better opportunities for the younger generation. The progress of sports in Nagaland will be measured not only by the competitions we organise, but also by the encouragement and opportunities we provide to those who participate.
