- DIMAPUR — The
Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, under Livestock Health
and Disease Control/ Classical Swine Fever-Control Programme (LH &
DC/CSF-CP) 2024-25, has commenced Round-II of Classical Swine Fever (CSF)
vaccination programme at the state piggery breeding farm at Lerie in Kohima on
Thursday and would conclude on June 10 as per the Government of India
guideline.
- The vaccination drive aims to immunise 2,50,000 numbers of
pigs susceptible against CSF, a highly contagious and economically devastating
disease that affects pig population. The programme is crucial in preventing the
spread of CSF, which could have severe consequences on the piggery industry and
livelihoods of piggery farmers, a DIPR report stated.
- Speaking at the launch event, Dr. BM Sunep, additional director
and head of AH&VS, emphasised the importance of vaccination in controlling
and eradication of CSF.

- It mentioned that vaccination is a crucial strategy for
preventing disease outbreaks in livestock. When combined with strict bio
security measures such as controlling access to farms, disinfecting equipment
and monitoring animal health, vaccination could significantly reduce the risk
of disease transmission.
- It added that those practices not only safeguard their own
operations but also protect surrounding agricultural communities from potential
outbreaks. By integrating vaccination with robust bio security protocols, the
animal husbandry sector could enhance its resilience against infectious
diseases.
- The vaccination programme is being implemented under
Livestock Health and Disease Control/ Classical Swine Fever-Control Programme
(LH&DC/CSF-CP), Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying, and Fisheries,
Government of India.
- Informing that the vaccination would be free, livestock
owners are encouraged to take advantage of the initiative and to cooperate with
the district and field officials to get their animals vaccinated to protect
their livelihood.
- The department further requested the district
administration, village council authorities to encourage the villagers and
farmers to compulsorily vaccinate their livestock.
