KOHIMA — The first State-Level Sub-Junior, Junior, and Senior Wushu (Sanda) Championship, organised by the Nagaland Wushu Association (NWA) in collaboration with the Department of Youth Resources and Sports (DYRS), commenced at the Pele Khezhie Indoor Stadium, Kohima, on Tuesday.
On the occasion, the guest of honour for the inaugural event, Pele Khezhie, president of the Nagaland Contractors and Suppliers Union (NCSU) and the Nagaland Taekwondo Association (NTA), lauded NWA and the DYRS for their efforts in making the event possible.
He commended the organisers for hosting Nagaland’s first-ever state-level Wushu championship and remarked that all the participants were “making history” by being part of the event.
Addressing the athletes, Khezhie said, “You have all worked hard, trained for many days, and shown great discipline to reach here. Remember, just by coming this far, you are already winners. Winning medals is good, but what matters most is that you try your best, respect your opponents, and enjoy every match.”

He asserted that sports teach a person to be strong, to get up even after falling, and to never give up, while also helping one become a good friend and teammate.
Advising the athletes, he added, “Whether you win or not, always encourage one another and help each other grow.”
It may be mentioned that a total of 93 athletes are participating in the championship: Peren (26), Kohima (18), Zunheboto (12), Dimapur (12), Mokokchung (12), Mon (9), and Phek (4).
The oath-taking was administered by Gabriel Khamo, technical secretary of NWA, who is also Nagaland’s first national gold medallist and an NIS-certified coach in the Wushu discipline.
