DIMAPUR — The month-long exhibit ‘Naga basketry in focus’ opened at the Heirloom Naga Centre Gallery, Sovima Village, Chümoukedima, on May 1, bringing attention to the enduring craft traditions of Naga communities.
According to an update, the exhibition, which will run until May 31, examines the cultural, functional and ecological significance of basketry, a practice deeply rooted in everyday Naga life.
Basketry in Naga society has historically served both practical and expressive purposes. Crafted from bamboo and cane, these objects are designed with great care to carry harvests, store grain and transport goods.
“The exhibit highlights this relationship between function and form while also drawing attention to the cultural knowledge embedded within the craft. Visitors are encouraged to look beyond the objects and engage with the histories and practices they represent,” it stated.
The update stated that the ‘Naga basketry in focus’ exhibit at the Heirloom Naga Centre Gallery offers audiences a space to encounter these traditions within a contemporary setting.
