DIMAPUR — The Department of Social Work, St. Xavier College, Senapati, organised a rural practicum at Liyai Khullen village from April 20 to the 26th, with an aim to provide social work students with practical exposure to rural life, foster community engagement, and deepen their understanding of social work practices in real-life settings.
A total of 24 Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) students participated in the field exposure camp conducted under the guidance of Assistant Professors Thairu Philomena RH, Liiveiru, and Athilu, informed an update from the college.
As part of the fieldwork, the team undertook a transect walk to observe and analyze the geographical and social structure of the village, followed by an orientation programme aimed at building rapport with the villagers and introducing the purpose of the camp.

A comprehensive socio-economic survey was conducted to assess the living conditions, lifestyle, and challenges faced by the local community. This allowed students to gain firsthand insights into rural realities, said the press release, adding that resource mapping was also carried out to identify and document the village’s available assets and resources.
As part of environmental initiatives, the students planted 60 Spanish cherry saplings in the village. They also organised a seminar on "Community and Environment," where resource person Meveinii John delivered an insightful session emphasising sustainable living and the importance of community participation.
To promote sanitation and civic responsibility, the team conducted a cleanliness drive in collaboration with the village youth and installed dustbins at various locations throughout the village, said the update, which added that a friendly volleyball match was also organised between the students and local youth with an aim to strengthen community bonding.
The practicum included a trekking experience to Bivoli and Vonuhro, offering students an opportunity to appreciate the natural beauty of the region.
The camp concluded with a cultural evening at the King's residence, where students and villagers gathered to celebrate and share their cultural traditions. As a gesture of gratitude and respect, the students presented appreciation certificates to the community, said the update.
