IMPHAL — Villages in Manipur's Senapati district, bordering Nagaland, have started witnessing snowfall as temperatures drop across the state.
Sharing photos of the snowfall in his village, Liyai Khullen village chairman DK Isaac Casii said they've been waking up to chilly mornings and snowfall since last week.
“Some of us attended village services today a little later due to cold weather,” he said.
The snowfall blanketed the entire hill slopes of the picturesque Vaonuhro area in Liyai Khullen with a layer of white snow in the morning.

“This has been happening since the past one week, but we hardly notice it,” Casii said.
The Giant Himalayan Lily (Cardiocrinum giganteum) also grows on the hill slopes of this village, located about 110 km northeast of Imphal, during its flowering season every year. The state’s biggest river Barak also originates from this village.
Similar snowfall was reported in the village's forest areas in Feb 2022, with thick snow blankets covering the area.
Senapati district HQ, about 60 km north of Imphal, has also been experiencing cold mornings with chilly winds since Christmas Eve.
“Even last night was very cold here,” said Daniel, a resident of Senapati.
Severe cold weather conditions also prevailed in most of the hill districts headquarters for the past one week.
Both Senapati and Ukhrul districts recorded a minimum temperature of 5.5 degree Celsius and 6.2 degree Celsius, respectively, on Sunday, according to the Directorate of Environment & Climate Change (DoCC) daily weather reports.
Weather experts say cold weather normally hits Manipur by December-end or early January. The state capital recorded its lowest minimum temp of 4.7°C on Dec 11, with chilly weather setting in despite sunny days.
