DIMAPUR — Several roadside shops along NH-29 highway in Chümoukedima district have been shut down following allegations of illegal activities and other “unwanted practices” taking place on leased private land.

The action follows a directive issued by the extra assistant commissioner (EAC) of Seithekema on June 18.

Speaking to Eastern Mirror, EAC Seyiekhrietuo Solo confirmed that the shops were closed down by the village council in consultation with the landowners concerned. He said that the action specifically targets properties leased to private individuals allegedly involved in illegal activities, including the sale and use of prohibited substances.

Solo also clarified that the dismantling of the shops, if any, will be at the discretion of the respective landowners.

In his earlier directive, the EAC had expressed concern over reports that some landowners had leased out plots to individuals who had established shops involved in illegal dealings—particularly the sale of alcohol and other intoxicants. These shops, located along the highway, were also reportedly becoming hotspots for night gatherings, endangering public safety.

The directive had instructed all village councils and gaon buras to identify such sites and coordinate with landowners to initiate appropriate action.

The village councils have since submitted a letter to the EAC office, outlining the actions taken in accordance with the directive.
