
Resource persons and nurses during the seminar on ‘Legal
& ethical standards in nursing practice’ in Kohima.
- DIMAPUR — A
one-day state seminar on ‘Legal & ethical standards in nursing practice,’
organised by the School of Nursing, Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) in
collaboration with the Kohima District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), was
held on May 30 at Hotel Japfü, Kohima.
- The seminar was conducted as part of a Continuing Nursing
Education (CNE) initiative and brought together 77 registered nurses and from
various institutions across the state, an update stated.
- Sunjib Rana, advocate and retainer lawyer, Kohima DLSA,
delivered the opening session on legal issues in nursing practice, addressing
critical areas such as patient consent, medical documentation, and malpractice laws.

- This was followed by two comprehensive sessions on ethical
issues in nursing led by Nagali Shohe, advocate and panel lawyer, Kohima DLSA.
She highlighted the importance of ethical decision-making, respect for patient
rights, and adherence to professional conduct.
- In the afternoon session, I Imchen, advocate, delivered a
presentation on the Patient's Bill of Rights, highlighting patient autonomy,
informed consent, and compassionate care as nursing practice essentials.
- The seminar concluded with a key session on legal safeguards
for nurses, delivered by S Tiakala Longkumer, Principal, School of Nursing,
NHAK. She offered practical strategies for nurses to protect themselves from
legal liabilities while maintaining high standards of professional accountability.
- The event was ably moderated by Imnanaro and Dr. Rachel Ao,
and coordinated by Khoshelu K Khamo. Pre- and post-assessment tests measured
participants' learning, with positive feedback highlighted during closing
remarks.
- “The seminar aimed to equip nursing professionals with legal
and ethical knowledge that strengthens both their practice and patient care,
promoting dignity, rights, and responsibility in the healthcare environment,”
the update stated.
