Nagaland University's School of Agricultural Sciences conducted a training programme on sustainable sesame cultivation in Chümoukedima.

DIMAPUR — The School of Agricultural Sciences (SAS), Nagaland University, Medziphema campus, organised a one-day training programme on scientific approaches for sustainable sesame cultivation at Sukhovi Village Council Hall in Chümoukedima on June 8.
The programme, held under the All India Co-ordinated Research Project on Sesame, was funded by the ICAR, AICRP-Sesame and Niger, Project Co-ordinating Unit, JNKVV, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.
According to an update, the training was attended by 30 farmers from Sukhovi village.
Project In-charge Dr. Debika Nongmaithem, Assistant Professor in the Department of Agronomy, highlighted the importance and potential of sesame in the oil production scenario of Nagaland. She stated that while sesame is cultivated in only a few patches of Nagaland, it remains in high demand as a major culinary staple in the state.

Dr. Nongmaithem deliberated on an integrated approach to increase sesame production and suggested that farmers should look beyond mere cultivation to aim for oil extraction, which would help reduce dependency on other states.
