DIMAPUR/WOKHA — District-level ‘padayatras’ and programmes commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel were held across districts on Friday as part of the “Sardar@150 Unity March” campaign.

In Dimapur, hundreds of students and government officials participated in the district-level padayatra organised by MeraYuva Bharat (MY Bharat) under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, in collaboration with the district administration and Dimapur Police.

The march was flagged off at 6 am by Khrusa Keyho, deputy commissioner of police (DCP), from Clock Tower and culminated at Dimapur Government College, passing through Clock Tower–Tajen Ao Road–Dimapur Government College.

Over 300 students, including NCC cadets, NSS volunteers, and youth club members, participated, carrying messages of unity and national integration.

Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur, Dr. Tinojongshi Chang, in his address, described Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel as a self-made success through determination and hard work. He said Patel came from a simple farming family and overcame financial difficulties through perseverance, becoming a successful barrister.

He noted that Patel’s leadership was best displayed during the Bardoli Satyagraha in 1928, where he mobilised farmers against unjust tax hikes.

Dr. Chang added that Patel's monumental achievement was the integration of over 560 princely states into the Indian Union. This act of uniting a fractured country using a mix of diplomacy, persuasion, and firm resolve offers a powerful vision for youth on how to bridge differences and build a cohesive society.

“His foresight in creating this ‘steel frame’ is a testament to the importance of effective and ethical governance,” he stated.

Zunheboto: In Zunheboto, the district administration, under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, organised a padayatra at Amphiboto AOC Junction. The programme was chaired by Nodal Officer and EAC (HQ) Tsoinchu Sangtam, with Deputy Commissioner Dharam Raj as the special guest.

According to a DIPR report, in his speech, the deputy commissioner described the event as a “celebration of unity, diversity, and patriotism” and urged all to uphold brotherhood and national pride.

The Unity March began at 7 am from Amphiboto AOC Junction, proceeding through multiple points before concluding at the Multi-Purpose Hall for the valedictory programme.

The march included performances by students and youth at various stops—songs, dances, and poetry highlighting national unity. The valedictory session, chaired by Extra Assistant Commissioner Chinglem Konyak, featured performances by Nikovino Rotokha and students of several schools.

In his concluding address, DC Raj encouraged citizens to walk together in unity and celebrate the milestone as a reflection of India’s diversity. He quoted Patel’s message that true strength comes from standing together regardless of differences.

He reminded participants that while administration represents structure, the real spirit comes from the people. Urging youth to embrace both modernity and tradition, he called for carrying forward the essence of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the world as one family.

A press briefing in connection with the event was held at the deputy commissioner’s conference hall, chaired by ADC Renbemo Ezung.

Addressing the meeting, Ezung stated that the Unity March aims to promote the spirit of unity and integrity among the community and to reflect on the life and contributions of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

The Unity March will commence at 7 am from Police Point and culminate at Mount Tiyi College, Wokha. Ezung appealed to all citizens to participate and contribute towards the success of the event.

It was mentioned that as part of the pre-event activities, Mount Tiyi College NSS and Bailey Baptist College NSS have organised programmes including debate competitions, talk shows on Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, poster-making contests, cleanliness drives, and yoga and wellness sessions to promote awareness.

NEISSR: The North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR) observed the National Unity Day on Friday at Peace Centre in Chümoukedima.

It stated that Dr. Toli H Kiba, assistant professor at NEISSR, delivered a message on the life, vision, and enduring contributions of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. She emphasised Patel’s commitment to social justice and national integration and his pioneering efforts in bringing together the diverse princely states to form a united India.

Pointing out that India today faces divisions in many areas—socially, politically, and regionally—Dr. Kiba stressed that it is crucial for citizens to look back and remember the great leader who once united the nation. She urged everyone to uphold Patel’s ideals by promoting unity, understanding, and respect for diversity in every sphere of life.
